Nigeria’s road safety agency has warned motorists against speeding and drink-driving during Valentine’s Day celebrations, as authorities intensify patrols nationwide.
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, said operational and public education measures had been put in place to ensure the safety of road users during the festivities.
In a statement released on Thursday, FRSC appealed to motorists to cooperate with officers deployed across the country, saying their presence was aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
He directed commanding officers across the country to increase the deployment of personnel to boost visibility, manage traffic and enforce road safety regulations.
Officers have also been instructed to use breathalysers and radar guns to identify and stop suspected drunk drivers and motorists exceeding speed limits. The aim, the agency said, is to reduce crashes and prevent avoidable deaths, injuries and damage to property.
Mr Mohammed said those marking the Valentine’s Day should do so responsibly by complying with traffic laws, warning that offenders would face sanctions.
The FRSC also urged members of the public to use its toll-free emergency number, 122, to report crashes, road obstructions or reckless driving for prompt intervention.
Parents and guardians were advised to caution young people to act responsibly during the celebrations, with the agency noting that youths are often more vulnerable at this time.
Valentine’s Day, observed annually on 14 February, is widely celebrated around the world as a day to express love and exchange gifts in memory of Saint Valentine.
