‘I Did the Work of Allah’: Woman Speaks Out After Being Passed Over for Iya Adini Position|LAGOS EYE NEWS

A Muslim woman has sparked debate on social media after claiming she was sidelined for a senior mosque leadership role despite years of voluntary service cleaning the premises.

In a personal account widely shared online, the woman said she had dedicated herself to maintaining the mosque’s cleanliness, regularly washing toilets, mopping floors, and ensuring the environment was suitable for worshippers.

She described her work as an act of devotion, saying she believed she was “doing the work of Allah” and remained committed even when the physical strain made her ill.

However, tensions arose when mosque leaders convened a meeting to appoint a new Iya Adini — a respected female leadership position in many Nigerian mosques, often associated with influence, recognition, and responsibility within the religious community.

The woman said she had expected to be considered, given what she described as her consistent dedication.

“I felt relaxed because I believed I truly deserved it,” she said, adding that she had even imagined preparing for the ceremonial occasion, possibly with support from a relative living in Saudi Arabia.

But when the Imam and other leaders announced the shortlisted names, she said hers was not included.

Instead, she claimed the role was given to women described as wealthy traders from Lagos Island markets, whom she alleged did not attend mosque regularly.

According to her, when she asked what role she would be given, she was told she would instead be responsible for carrying the offering box during collections.

She questioned whether such treatment reflected fairness within the religious community, particularly for less affluent members who contribute through physical service rather than financial means.

Her account has since triggered widespread discussion online, with some expressing sympathy and arguing that religious recognition should be based on commitment and service, not social or economic status. Others noted that leadership appointments in mosques can depend on multiple factors, including seniority, financial contributions, and community influence.
