Man dies in apartment fire in northern Germany |LAGOS EYE NEWS

An 81-year-old man was found dead after a fire broke out in an apartment above a shopping centre in the northern German city of Kiel, police said late on Saturday.

The victim was the resident of the flat, according to police. The cause of the fire remains unclear and the apartment in the city centre is no longer habitable.

Two residents suffered mild smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene, police said. Other residents were unhurt and were allowed to return to their apartments after firefighters extinguished the blaze. The apartment where the fire started has been sealed off for investigation.

At around 8:20 pm (1920GMT), the fire brigade said it was responding with a large contingent of emergency crews to a blaze in which lives were at risk. Several people were initially reported missing in the smoke-filled building.

The deceased man was found during firefighting efforts, police said.

According to a dpa reporter, the fire broke out in a third-floor apartment. A neighbour heard cries for help coming from the burning flat, a police spokeswoman told dpa, and flames were seen shooting from a window.

The apartment is part of the same complex as the Sophienhof shopping centre next to the city’s main railway station. The complex also includes offices, arcades and residential apartments.
