Redeemer’s University denies change to instalment fee policy |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The management of Redeemer’s University has dismissed reports that it altered its instalment payment structure, amid claims that some students were barred from hostels over unpaid fees.

In a statement issued by its Corporate Affairs Directorate, Oluwasegun Adeleye, the university described as “false” a document circulating on social media which suggested that students who failed to complete full payment of their 2025/2026 academic session fees by 13 February 2026 would be sent on vacation until 27 February.

The university said the document had fuelled “rumours and unease” among returning students ahead of the second semester.

It insisted that its long-standing instalment arrangement remains unchanged. Under the policy, students are required to pay 40% of their fees at the start of the first semester, 20% before first semester examinations, and the remaining 40% at the commencement of the second semester.

The management stressed that the balance is due at the resumption of the second semester, and not before second semester examinations as suggested in the disputed document.

According to the university, the instalment system was introduced more than a decade ago to ease the financial burden on parents. It acknowledged, however, that the arrangement had been “abused over the years”, prompting what it described as the enforcement of an existing policy rather than the introduction of a new one.

The institution noted that, unlike some private universities, it does not receive government or external funding, and relies largely on tuition fees to meet its statutory obligations and provide services.

The Vice-Chancellor, Shadrach Olufemi Akindele, said the university remains open to considering requests for payment extensions on a case-by-case basis.

“Even though we have our payment rules, we still oblige parents who request for extension on an individual basis,” he said.

Professor Akindele added that the university offers scholarships to students who excel academically, in sports, and in debate competitions. He also said the institution works with philanthropists to support indigent students.

He further stated that students whose parents are members, workers or ministers of the Redeemed Christian Church of God are eligible for varying levels of educational grants.
