Three people have been confirmed dead after a passenger bus plunged into the Ariyo River along Amuloko Road in Ibadan.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande, disclosed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday.
According to him, the agency received a distress call on Wednesday from a caller identified as Fadeke Yusuf, reporting that a bus had fallen into the river. Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene for a rescue operation.
Akinwande said responders arrived to find a Suzuki passenger bus with registration number LEW 484 XA, from Osun State, carrying eight passengers. The vehicle reportedly lost control before plunging into the river.
Five passengers were rescued alive and taken to Ona-Ara Private Hospital in the Jegede area for medical treatment, while the bodies of three victims were later recovered from the river.
The corpses were subsequently handed over to police officers from the Ogbere Divisional Police Headquarters, led by ASP Aishat Ibrahim.
Akinwande attributed the accident to reckless driving and urged motorists to drive responsibly and adhere strictly to road safety regulations to prevent avoidable crashes.
He also commended personnel of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA), Ona-Ara Division, and the Chairman of Ona-Ara Local Government Area, Glorious Temitope, for their support during the rescue operation.
