Former Liberian President and football legend George Weah has strongly criticized the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to withdraw hosting rights of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations from Senegal and award them to Morocco.
In a statement issued on March 18, 2026, Weah argued that CAF’s decision undermines the fundamental principles of football as outlined in the FIFA Laws of the Game. He emphasized that referees hold the ultimate authority during matches, and their decisions on the field should be final.
Referencing Law 5 of the Laws of the Game, Weah noted that the referee in the disputed AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco allowed play to continue despite a walk-off by Senegal, with the match ultimately completed, including extra time, and a result recorded on the pitch.
He further revealed that the referee’s post-match report described the incident as a stoppage rather than a forfeiture, recommending sanctions for infractions committed during the match. Based on this, Weah argued that CAF’s subsequent ruling should not override the referee’s authority or the outcome of a completed game.
“Football must be decided on the pitch, not re-decided after the final whistle,” Weah stated, warning that such actions could set a dangerous precedent where administrative bodies overturn on-field decisions.
The former Ballon d’Or winner also expressed concern that the decision could damage the integrity and credibility of African football, calling on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and other relevant authorities to intervene.
Weah also dismissed circulating social media claims suggesting he supports CAF’s decision, describing them as false and urging those responsible to desist from spreading misinformation.
