President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday swore in Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, describing him as a dedicated professional whose expertise will strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal and tax reforms.
The brief swearing-in ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the President said the appointment reflects his confidence in Oyedele’s competence and commitment to public service.
Tinubu praised the new minister for his role as chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, noting that his leadership had been instrumental in shaping ongoing efforts to simplify Nigeria’s tax system, broaden the revenue base, and create a more business-friendly environment.
According to the President, Oyedele’s deep understanding of tax policy and reform was a key factor in the decision to appoint him to the new role.
“You are a very dedicated and highly determined individual. It didn’t take much for me to decide where you fit and where you need to be to further help with the economy,” Tinubu said.
The President also acknowledged the challenges of managing fiscal policy during a period of economic stability without strong growth, expressing confidence that Oyedele possesses the capacity to handle the responsibility.
Tinubu further commended Oyedele’s commitment to public service and the reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s tax framework.
Oyedele, who hails from Ikaram in Akoko area of Ondo State, is an economist, accountant and public policy expert.
He holds a Higher National Diploma in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology and later obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University.
He has also completed executive education programmes at institutions including the London School of Economics, Yale University, Gordon Institute of Business Science and the Harvard Kennedy School.
Before his appointment, Oyedele spent 22 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he joined in 2001 and rose to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.
He is also a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and serves as a visiting scholar at the Lagos Business School.
The appointment is expected to strengthen the federal government’s fiscal reforms as the administration seeks to boost revenue generation and improve economic management.
