The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has assured residents of Lagos State that comprehensive measures are being implemented to improve waste evacuation and environmental sanitation across the state.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, gave the assurance while addressing concerns over waste collection challenges experienced in some parts of Lagos. He acknowledged the operational difficulties and stated that the state government had put in place immediate, medium-term, and long-term strategies to enhance service delivery.
According to Gbadegesin, recent waste evacuation challenges were partly caused by difficulties in accessing disposal facilities, especially during the peak of the rainy season.
He revealed that LAWMA’s waste-to-wealth partner, ZoomLion Nigeria Limited, had commenced preliminary works to stabilise and reopen Road E at the Olusosun disposal facility. The intervention, he said, would improve access to the site, reduce turnaround time for waste trucks, and boost operational efficiency.
The LAWMA boss also disclosed that the authority had revitalised and optimised the use of Transfer Loading Stations (TLSs) across the state as a temporary measure to facilitate faster waste evacuation from communities pending the completion of ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
Gbadegesin said the state government was supporting the acquisition of additional waste collection vehicles by Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators.
He added that the planned deployment of 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered compactor trucks would significantly increase waste evacuation capacity statewide.
He further noted that 10 new compactor trucks donated by the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Board had already been deployed to strengthen waste collection operations.
On environmental compliance, Gbadegesin stated that the government had intensified enforcement against indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental offences. He added that a coordinated Waste Police initiative involving transport unions, community groups, and other stakeholders had recently been established to discourage illegal dumping and promote environmental responsibility.
The LAWMA chief also disclosed that the state government was exploring inter-state collaboration to complement existing waste disposal infrastructure and improve operational flexibility in waste management.
Providing operational statistics, Gbadegesin said LAWMA’s disposal facilities received more than 418,500 tonnes of waste in May 2026 despite the challenges encountered during the period. He added that about 3,000 waste blackspots were being cleared daily through ongoing sanitation interventions.
He highlighted the ongoing construction of new Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, explaining that the facilities would collectively divert up to 4,000 tonnes of waste daily to recycling and treatment facilities upon completion.
According to him, the development would reduce pressure on disposal sites, support Lagos State’s circular economy agenda, and advance efforts to modernise waste management through increased investment in recycling, material recovery, and sustainable waste-to-resource initiatives.
Gbadegesin urged residents to continue patronising approved PSP operators, refrain from indiscriminate waste disposal, and support government efforts aimed at maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment.
He reassured Lagos residents that the current operational challenges were being actively addressed and expressed confidence that waste management services would improve progressively as the various interventions take effect.
The LAWMA chief reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to enhancing waste management services and pledged that all relevant stakeholders would continue working diligently to restore optimal service delivery across affected communities.
