Peter Obi Raises Concern Over Sowore’s Remand in Kuje Prison |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the court-ordered remand of activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Prison, warning against actions that could undermine democratic freedoms and civic engagement in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi said he received news of Sowore’s remand “with deep concern,” stressing the need to safeguard the independence of democratic institutions and protect citizens’ constitutional rights.

While acknowledging the judiciary as the ultimate arbiter of justice, Obi cautioned against any development that could create the impression that state institutions are being used to suppress dissenting voices, restrict press freedom, or limit civic participation.

“A thriving democracy does not survive on the silencing of opposing voices,” Obi said, adding that the protection of fundamental rights, particularly freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, remains essential to democratic governance.

The former Anambra State governor noted that Nigeria is already grappling with insecurity and economic hardship, urging all arms of government, including the judiciary, to avoid actions that could further heighten tensions in the country.

He warned that treating critics, activists, and journalists as threats rather than partners in promoting accountability could signal a drift toward authoritarianism.

According to Obi, the nation’s economic and security challenges require inclusive dialogue and collective nation-building efforts rather than the incarceration of individuals advocating for societal reforms.

He called on relevant authorities to ensure strict adherence to the rule of law and guarantee the protection of Sowore’s constitutional rights.

Obi further urged security agencies and judicial institutions to remain impartial in the administration of justice, insisting that Nigeria’s democratic structures must be strengthened rather than weakened.

“We cannot build a New Nigeria if we continue to undermine the very democratic structures meant to protect us all,” he stated.
