Reports indicate that a devastating earthquake has caused widespread destruction across Venezuela, resulting in significant loss of life, numerous injuries, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
The tragedy has also deeply affected the country’s football community, with several players and promising young talents reportedly among those impacted.
Marítimo de La Guaira player Héctor Bello is said to have lost his wife during the disaster. According to reports, she sacrificed her life to save their daughter by shielding the child beneath the collapsing rubble.
In an emotional tribute shared after the tragedy, Bello wrote: “I will tell her the story of how you saved her, my love, how you gave your life for our daughter, how you were a brave woman who never left her side, not even as you took your last breath.”
He added: “You left us to fight this battle alone. How am I supposed to explain to our daughter that you gave your life to save hers, and that I wasn’t there to do anything?”
The disaster also reportedly claimed the lives of the wife and two children of Bello’s teammate, Lucas Trejo. They were said to have been found after more than 70 hours of search-and-rescue operations.
Several young Venezuelan footballers were also reported among the victims. These include Yimvert Berroterán, who reportedly died alongside his girlfriend; Caracas Under-18 prospect Razan Sijaa, who lost his life while spending time with family members; and Ricardo Veloz, regarded as one of Venezuela’s promising young football talents.
Reports also identified 14-year-old Víctor Palacios as one of the youngest victims. He was described as an aspiring footballer who dreamed of reaching the international stage.
