South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed 36-year-old Yusuf Cassim as the country’s Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training as part of a Cabinet reshuffle announced by the Presidency.
Cassim, who was born in the Eastern Cape, is a senior member of the Democratic Alliance and a Muslim South African of Indian descent.
He entered Parliament in 2014 at the age of 24, becoming South Africa’s youngest Member of Parliament at the time.
Reacting to his appointment, Cassim pledged to strengthen South Africa’s higher education sector and expand access to educational opportunities for disadvantaged students.
The Cabinet reshuffle also saw the appointment of Jack Bloom as Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Alexandra Abrahams as Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, John Steenhuisen as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, and Willem Aucamp as Minister of Agriculture.
