The Minister of Youth Development, Olawande Emmanuel Ayodele, has clarified that the Federal Government has not approved any new fabric or design to replace the current National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform.
The clarification followed media reports that emerged after his appearance on Channels Television on Thursday, where he discussed the ongoing reforms of the NYSC scheme.
In a statement, the minister explained that his references to Adire and Ankara during the interview were merely examples of proposals that had been submitted during consultations and should not be interpreted as an announcement of an approved replacement for the existing uniform.
According to him, the government is considering several options that meet key requirements, including professional appearance, national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the promotion of national pride.
“No final decision has been taken on the fabric or design,” he stated.
Ayodele noted that any decision on the NYSC uniform would be based on extensive stakeholder consultations and guided by what best serves the interests of the scheme and the country.
He urged Nigerians to focus on the broader objectives of the ongoing NYSC reforms rather than the debate over the proposed uniform.
The minister said the reforms are aimed at making the scheme more relevant to current realities by improving the employability of corps members, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and easing the transition from education to productive careers.
While acknowledging the public interest in discussions surrounding the NYSC uniform, Ayodele stressed that the issue should not overshadow the broader reform agenda designed to empower millions of Nigerian youths and strengthen the scheme’s role in national development.
He also appreciated the constructive feedback from Nigerians, assuring that all proposals under consideration would be carefully evaluated in the best interest of the nation.
