The African Union (AU) has convened an emergency meeting following the United States’ announcement that it will end funding for key support to peacekeepers in Somalia by the end of 2026.

The funding currently covers essential logistics, including food, fuel, transportation, medical services, and equipment for approximately 12,000 African peacekeepers assisting Somalia’s security forces in the fight against the militant group al-Shabaab.

According to Washington, the United States has contributed nearly $2 billion to African Union peacekeeping operations in Somalia since 2007.

US officials say the decision reflects concerns that Somalia’s government has not made sufficient progress in assuming responsibility for its own security.

In response, AU officials are exploring alternative sources of funding to sustain the mission. Security analysts warn that without adequate financial support, the peacekeeping operation could be significantly weakened, potentially allowing al-Shabaab to regain territory and expand its influence in Somalia.
