The Federal Government has approved the concession of King’s College, Lagos, to the King’s College Old Boys’ Association (KCOBA), in a move aimed at revitalising one of Nigeria’s oldest and most prestigious secondary schools.
The approval was announced on Monday during a press briefing held at the Metropolitan Club, Victoria Island, Lagos, where KCOBA President, Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, described the development as a historic milestone in the school’s 116-year history.
Speaking at the briefing, Ibrahim-Imam explained that the concession does not amount to the sale or privatisation of the institution. He said the arrangement introduces a new governance model that will enable the alumni association to partner with the Federal Government in restoring, modernising, and sustaining the college.
According to him, while King’s College has produced generations of distinguished Nigerians across sectors including law, public service, business, medicine, engineering, diplomacy, and academia, years of deteriorating infrastructure and weakened institutional systems have made comprehensive reforms necessary.
The KCOBA president expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the initiative, describing the decision as a bold step towards preserving one of Nigeria’s foremost educational institutions. He also commended the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for his support in advancing the reform.
Ibrahim-Imam assured Nigerians that the concession would not alter the school’s federal status, stressing that King’s College would continue to admit students from across the country irrespective of ethnic, religious, or socio-economic background.
He further addressed concerns over the affordability of the institution, stating that KCOBA has no intention of making the school exclusive to wealthy families. Instead, he disclosed that the association has established a ₦100 billion Collegium Fund to finance the school’s rehabilitation and long-term development without imposing additional financial burdens on parents.
