World Population Day: India, China Lead Global Population Rankings as Türkiye Places 18th |LAGOS EYE NEWS

As the world marks World Population Day, new demographic data has reaffirmed India as the world’s most populous country, followed by China, while the United States ranks third in global population.

According to the latest estimates from the United Nations and national statistical agencies, India overtook China as the world’s most populous nation in 2023 and has maintained the top position, with a population exceeding 1.46 billion.

China follows closely with more than 1.41 billion people, while the United States has a population of over 340 million.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) reported that Türkiye ranks 18th among 194 countries, with a population of approximately 86.1 million, accounting for just over one percent of the global population.

The data also shows that the world’s population has surpassed 8.2 billion, with population growth increasingly concentrated in developing countries, particularly across Asia and Africa.

Demographers note that while some nations continue to experience rapid population growth driven by high birth rates, others face ageing populations and declining fertility rates.

World Population Day was established by the United Nations and annually observed on July 11 to raise awareness of global population issues, including reproductive health, gender equality, sustainable development, urbanisation, and the impact of population trends on economic and environmental planning.
