Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister, Succeeds Keir Starmer |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Andy Burnham has officially become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Monday, succeeding Keir Starmer.

Keir Starmer departed Downing Street earlier on Monday, stating that Britain is “stronger and fairer” following his two years in office.

Burnham, 56, and the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, becomes Britain’s sixth prime minister in the last 10 years. He takes office after Starmer resigned last month amid a series of political scandals and policy U-turns.

In his inaugural address as Prime Minister, Burnham pledged to rebuild public confidence in government, address the cost-of-living crisis, drive economic growth, and expand the devolution of powers across the country.

“What we’ve been doing hasn’t been working. I am going to try and do things in a different way,” Burnham said in an interview with The Times.

As his first major policy decision, Burnham announced the cancellation of the £1.8 billion digital ID scheme introduced under Starmer’s administration, saying the funds would instead be redirected toward measures aimed at easing the cost-of-living pressures facing households.
