The United States has launched a new task force aimed at tackling so-called “birth tourism”, under which foreign nationals travel to the country primarily to give birth and secure American citizenship for their children.
The US State Department said the Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force has already revoked more than 600 visas worldwide as part of the crackdown.
The move follows executive orders signed by President Donald Trump directing authorities to deny or revoke visas and take action against foreign nationals suspected of entering the US mainly for the purpose of giving birth.
According to officials, the task force will examine visa and travel histories, identify suspected cases and investigate networks accused of profiting from birth tourism.
The State Department said some operators provide services including visa coaching, accommodation and hospital arrangements while allegedly helping clients conceal the actual purpose of their trips.
Authorities warned that foreigners who deliberately misrepresent their travel plans could face permanent bans on obtaining US visas or entering the country.
The latest measures form part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts to tighten immigration controls and prevent what it considers abuse of the US immigration and citizenship system.
