Katsina was thrown into shock on Wednesday after a newly signed Katsina United defender, Chinedu Ozor, reportedly showed signs of life after he had earlier been pronounced dead at a hospital.
Ozor reportedly collapsed during a pre-season friendly between Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Tuesday.
He was immediately taken to hospital, where doctors reportedly pronounced him dead. Following the development, Katsina United issued a condolence message mourning the player, while tributes were also reportedly paid by some of his former clubs and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
However, the situation reportedly took an unexpected turn after his body was taken to the mortuary at Katsina General Hospital.
According to reports, mortuary personnel noticed movement from Ozor and subsequently raised the alarm. He was reportedly rushed back to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he is said to be receiving oxygen and undergoing treatment.
Katsina United’s press officer, Nasir Gide, reportedly confirmed that the club had obtained a police report following the initial declaration of death before receiving information that the player had shown signs of life.
The development has left the football community stunned, with tributes that had already been issued now replaced by prayers for Ozor’s recovery.
As of the latest reports, Ozor remains under medical care, with supporters, teammates and football fans across Nigeria hoping for his recovery.
