Christian minister Toluwalogo Agboola has expressed concern over the influence of some contemporary teachings on young Christian women, particularly messages about independence, relationships and marriage.
Speaking during a teaching session, Agboola urged women to examine the voices and mentors they regularly listen to, saying such influences could shape their attitudes towards men, marriage and femininity.
“Many of you will struggle to get married because you are not being raised to be women,” he said.
Agboola argued that Christian marriage should be guided by what he described as biblical principles of honour and submission. He said teachings that encourage women to completely reject male leadership do not align with the model of marriage he believes is presented in Scripture.
The minister also criticised what he described as the growing normalisation of divorce and the promotion of complete independence from men.
On expectations for potential husbands, Agboola said some women now seek men who are already financially and professionally established.
He contrasted this with previous generations, who, according to him, sometimes married men whose future success was not immediately evident and built their families together.
Agboola further encouraged women to assess how the content they consume has affected their character and relationships.
“Check how your tenderness… your femininity has been affected since you started listening to who you were listening to,” he said.
He concluded by challenging what he described as the modern emphasis on independence, arguing that maturity should also involve an appreciation of structure, accountability and what he referred to as “government.”
