President Bola Tinubu has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure that the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election is peaceful, transparent and credible.
The President gave the directive as 15 candidates prepare to contest the election, including the incumbent Governor, Ademola Adeleke; the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji; and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged residents of Osun State to come out and exercise their civic rights while avoiding actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.
The President also assured voters of adequate security before, during and after the election.
According to the statement, INEC must use the Osun governorship election, the final off-cycle governorship election before the 2027 general elections, as an opportunity to demonstrate its preparedness for the forthcoming polls.
Tinubu further directed the Inspector-General of Police and heads of other security agencies deployed for the election to provide maximum security at polling units and prevent troublemakers from disrupting the exercise.
He stressed that electoral officials and voters must be adequately protected to enable them to perform their civic responsibilities without fear, intimidation or harassment.
The President therefore urged eligible voters to come out in large numbers and freely cast their ballots for candidates of their choice, assuring them that necessary measures had been put in place to guarantee a peaceful, free and fair election.
Tinubu reiterated that elections must be credible and that the outcome of the Osun governorship election must reflect the genuine will of the people.
