The Federal Government has approved the development and deployment of four new satellites to strengthen Nigeria’s space technology and Earth observation capabilities.
The initiative, to be implemented through the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), is expected to expand the use of satellite technology in key sectors of the economy and national development.
The four satellites will comprise three optical satellites and one Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite.
According to the government, the new satellites will improve Nigeria’s capacity to monitor and obtain timely information on the country’s land, environment and other areas of strategic importance.
The SAR satellite will also provide the country with enhanced observation capabilities under cloudy weather conditions and at night, complementing the capabilities of the optical satellites.
The technology is expected to support critical areas including national security, agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management and urban planning.
The Federal Government said the initiative reflects its commitment to leveraging science, technology and innovation to drive national development.
It added that the project would strengthen Nigeria’s technological capacity and provide reliable data to support evidence-based decision-making across various sectors.
