The Lagos State Sports Commission says it is taking steps to address concerns raised by a mother over the alleged hindrance of her daughter’s participation in a major sporting engagement.
The woman, whose daughter represents Lagos in sports, had expressed her disappointment in a viral video, alleging that personnel of a local government prevented the young athlete from taking part in the event.
Following the video, the leadership of the Lagos State Sports Commission, led by its Director-General, Lekan Fatodu, met with the woman and her daughter to hear their account and offer immediate support.
The mother acknowledged the commission’s role in supporting her daughter and other young athletes, but urged the government to do more to ensure that other public institutions do not obstruct the ambitions of young people, particularly girls.
Mr Fatodu said the commission would contact the government agency involved to prevent a repeat of the incident.
He also announced plans for a broader policy response, including stronger communication between the commission, parents and young athletes, as well as increased awareness among government ministries, departments and agencies about protecting emerging sporting talent.
“The dream of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is to see young talents being discovered in Lagos and nurtured to full potential,” Mr Fatodu said.
“Any action by anyone or an entity that seeks to negate that lofty ambition for youth empowerment through sports will be a massive disservice to efforts on talent development,” he added.
