The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have agreed to strengthen collaboration to provide stable and reliable electricity to households, businesses and industries across the Lagos corridor.

The agreement was reached during a high-level technical meeting between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, his ministry’s delegation and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House, Marina.

The collaboration is part of the Federal Government’s 24/7 Energy Zones pilot programme, approved by President Bola Tinubu, which is expected to commence in Lagos before extending to the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors.

Speaking at the meeting, Tegbe said the Ministry of Power had secured commitments from electricity distribution companies to increase power offtake and ensure more consistent electricity supply to customers along the Lagos corridor.

He said the Federal Government was ready to work with Lagos State on four priority areas approved by the President: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonisation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his remarks, welcomed the Federal Government’s initiative and said Lagos was committed to developing practical solutions to persistent challenges in the electricity sector.

He said the state required more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity and would pursue a more reliable and sustainable electricity market capable of supporting the goal of 24-hour power supply.

According to the governor, achieving the objective would require increased investment in embedded and off-grid generation, improved transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as a regulatory framework suited to the state’s electricity market.

Sanwo-Olu also cited the Electricity Act 2023 and the Lagos Electricity Law 2024 as legal frameworks that could support efforts to address grid bottlenecks and improve gas supply for power generation.

He acknowledged the contributions of federal agencies, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Rural Electrification Agency (REA), alongside other stakeholders.

The governor said the ultimate objective was for residents and businesses in Lagos to experience a measurable improvement in electricity supply.

To translate the agreement into concrete action, the Minister announced the establishment of a Joint Technical Committee to examine outstanding challenges in the sector and recommend next steps.

The committee will be chaired by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy.

Its membership will include representatives of NERC, TCN, REA, Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), Lagos State Independent Electricity System Operator (LAISO), Lagos State Electricity and related agencies, as well as the Office of the Minister of Power.

The Joint Technical Committee will report to a Steering Committee chaired by Governor Sanwo-Olu and co-chaired by the Minister of Power.

The Steering Committee will also include the Special Adviser to the President on Power, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Power and the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy.
