The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has been selected as one of the 39 recipients of the 2026 EPIC Air Quality Fund Grant by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC), to support efforts aimed at improving air quality monitoring, data generation and pollution control in selected abattoirs across Lagos State.
The grant, awarded under EPIC’s Clean Air Program, is part of a global initiative supporting government agencies, researchers, companies and non-profit organisations in countries where air pollution is high and reliable public air quality data remains limited.
The 2026 EPIC Air Quality Fund recipients were selected from nearly 400 applications received from 83 countries, with the successful projects expected to strengthen air quality infrastructure, expand access to open air quality data and contribute to national-level action on air pollution across 34 countries.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, said the grant represents an important opportunity for the Agency to deepen its efforts towards generating reliable environmental data and using such data to guide policy direction and interventions.
Dr Ajayi noted that the project would provide a clearer understanding of air pollution associated with animal skin processing in Lagos abattoirs and its potential impact on workers, surrounding communities and the environment.
He said, “This project will enable us to generate reliable data that will provide a clearer understanding of air pollution associated with animal skin processing in Lagos abattoirs. The evidence generated will support practical solutions, strengthen environmental policies and promote cleaner and healthier abattoir environments.”
The General Manager further disclosed that, through the support of the Lagos State Government, LASEPA has so far installed 201 air quality sensors across Lagos State to monitor ambient air quality and provide real time data that can support environmental management and informed decision-making.
