Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has confirmed that defender Lisandro Martinez is available for selection ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Leeds United.
Carrick said Martinez, who is also known as Licha, remains part of the squad, adding that the team had moved on from the incident that sparked discussions about the defender.
“It’s done. We’ve moved on from that. It was one of those things. As a group, we’ve moved on. It’s really not a drama for the group,” Carrick said.
He added that Martinez understood he had made a mistake and that the squad had continued training in good spirits despite the team’s recent results.
Carrick also dismissed suggestions that outside speculation was affecting his relationship with the players, insisting that the squad continued to believe in him.
“Just because people talk on the outside doesn’t make it the truth. I am telling you the truth. It’s as simple as that,” he said.
The United manager said the team’s response in recent circumstances had demonstrated its underlying belief and togetherness, although he acknowledged that the players remained disappointed with their results.
According to Carrick, the challenges facing the club had helped galvanise the squad as it sought to improve its performances.
However, Sky Sports journalist Pete Gill noted that United’s progress would ultimately be judged by results on the pitch.
Gill said Carrick had remained calm during his press conference but argued that the manager’s insistence that everything was well within the squad needed to be backed up by improved performances.
Manchester United will face Leeds United on Sunday, with the fixture presenting an opportunity for Carrick’s side to respond to its recent run of results.
