Lagos Taskforce Arrests Dismissed Officer Over Alleged Impersonation in Oshodi |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Lagos State Taskforce has arrested a dismissed former operative, identified as Yahaya Salami, popularly known as Adams, over alleged impersonation after a video of his apprehension in Oshodi went viral on social media.

The agency disclosed this in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, following the arrest at Oshodi Bus Stop, Lagos, on Monday.

According to the statement, Salami was dismissed from service several months ago over alleged gross misconduct, including theft, use of a fake identity card, extortion of motorists and traders, and indiscipline.

The agency alleged that despite his dismissal, the former operative continued to present himself as a serving member of the Taskforce.

It said the arrest followed previous unsuccessful attempts to locate him, adding that operatives approached him for questioning but he allegedly rejected the invitation and resisted arrest.

The statement said the officers eventually brought the situation under control through what it described as effective tactical coordination and professionalism, using minimal force.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, clarified that Salami no longer had any affiliation with the agency.

Akerele expressed concern that the alleged impersonation could mislead members of the public and undermine confidence in legitimate law enforcement activities.

The agency said the arrest was part of its efforts to prevent dismissed personnel and unauthorised individuals from exploiting its name, identity and authority for unlawful purposes.

It also highlighted its public enlightenment campaigns across the 57 local government areas and local council development areas in Lagos State, aimed at promoting compliance with existing laws, maintaining order and improving public safety.

The campaigns also target commercial motorcycle operators and other road users, particularly on compliance with traffic regulations and restrictions on designated routes, including the coastal road.

The Taskforce said the suspect was expected to be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction on Monday, subject to the completion of necessary procedures.

Akerele warned dismissed personnel and other individuals against impersonating serving officers or engaging in activities capable of bringing the agency into disrepute.

He urged residents to remain vigilant, verify the identities of individuals claiming to be Taskforce officials and report suspicious activities through appropriate channels.

The chairman also called on journalists to uphold responsible reporting by verifying allegations, establishing facts and obtaining the perspectives of relevant parties before publication.

He said balanced and factual reporting was necessary to prevent misinformation, promote fairness and sustain public confidence.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law and protecting residents, warning that it would not tolerate the misuse of its name or authority.

The statement ended with the agency’s public safety slogan: “See Something, Say Something.”
