China’s AI, Semiconductor Stocks Lose $480bn in Market Value Amid Sharp Selloff |

China’s artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor stocks have suffered a sharp market downturn, wiping out approximately $480 billion in market value and raising fresh concerns about the valuations of technology companies.

According to a Reuters analysis published on October 26, 2026, China’s STAR50 Index has fallen by about 40 per cent in less than four months, interrupting a prolonged rally in the country’s technology stocks.

The selloff reflects growing investor concerns over whether demand for artificial intelligence can justify the high valuations previously assigned to companies operating in the sector.

Market uncertainty has also been fuelled by concerns over restrictions affecting Chinese technology exports, adding pressure to an already volatile investment environment.

The decline represents a significant setback for Chinese technology shares, which had benefited from growing enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, semiconductor development and the expansion of advanced computing technologies.

However, the market correction does not necessarily indicate a comparable decline in China’s AI research, semiconductor manufacturing capacity or overall technological capabilities.

Rather, the fall in share prices highlights the distinction between investors’ expectations of future growth and the financial performance and prospects of technology companies.

The developments could also have implications for international markets, particularly in the United States, where investor sentiment towards AI-related businesses has become an important factor in technology stock valuations.

A sustained downturn in China’s technology sector could influence global investor confidence and prompt renewed scrutiny of valuations across the broader artificial intelligence industry.

Nevertheless, the extent to which the selloff will affect other markets will depend on subsequent earnings, demand for AI products, trade restrictions and investors’ assessment of the sector’s long-term growth prospects.
