Protesters block Hamburg university building ahead of weekend rallies |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Around 50 demonstrators blocked entrances to a university building in Hamburg on Wednesday morning, ahead of nationwide youth protests planned for Saturday in Germany.

Police said the demonstration at the Finkenau arts and media campus of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) was initially unregistered but was formally reported at around 7:30 am (0630 GMT).

A dpa reporter saw entrances to the building blocked with construction barriers and rubbish containers.

A university spokesman played the demonstration down, saying protesters had not prevented students or staff from entering the building. “Operations are continuing as normal. No events have been cancelled,” he said.

A banner urged people to join Saturday’s demonstrations in support of education and social justice.

“For a better, affordable life for everyone,” one protester shouted through a megaphone, followed by: “The rich want war, young people want a future.”

Demonstrators also chanted demands for €100 billion ($111 billion) in funding for education and social services.

Similar youth demonstrations have taken place in France, Spain, Italy and Albania, but Germany has so far seen no comparable wave of protests.
