The Federal Government has cautioned Nigerians against fraudsters seeking to exploit its newly introduced ₦50,000 monthly cash relief programme, stressing that eligible beneficiaries are not required to apply, pay any fee or register through agents to receive the support.
The programme, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is a presidential initiative designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of vulnerable households amid rising living costs.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, disclosed this in a statement, explaining that the intervention was introduced in response to global food inflation, which continues to put pressure on household finances.
According to the minister, the programme is also aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is aimed at cushioning the economic difficulties faced by vulnerable Nigerians.
Doro explained that selected beneficiaries would receive text messages from the programme’s service providers requesting their consent before payments are made directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
He warned Nigerians against disclosing their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to individuals or groups claiming to facilitate access to the intervention.
The minister emphasised that beneficiaries would not be required to submit applications, pay registration fees or engage agents to access the monthly financial support.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and disregard unsolicited requests for payment or sensitive banking information, warning that such demands could be attempts by fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting citizens.
Doro reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the intervention with dignity, transparency and accountability, while ensuring that the intended beneficiaries receive the support.
