The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots sports development and talent discovery among pupils through the Basic Education Schools Sports (BESS) competition.
Dauda, represented by the General Secretary, South East Sports UBEC, Mr Philips Omeri, said the competition was a demonstration of the commission’s commitment to support basic education across the federation.
Omeri explained that winners of the competition would represent Enugu State at the geopolitical zone level, stressing that the competition was aimed at creating opportunities for talented pupils to advance beyond their schools and states.
He urged participants to embrace sportsmanship, discipline and mutual respect, stressing that both winners and losers should accept the results of the competition in good faith.
According to Omeri, sports contribute to children’s physical health, personal development and social integration.
Also speaking, the ENSUBEB member One, Mr Afam Nnaji, said the competition was aimed at nurturing pupils from an early age, keeping them physically fit and mentally alert, and preparing them for future opportunities in sports.
Nnaji said identified talents would be encouraged to continue training as they progress from primary to secondary school and beyond, potentially advancing to national and international sporting platforms.
He also advised the pupils to remain disciplined, avoid trouble and take their academic work seriously, noting that sporting excellence should go hand in hand with education.
In an interview, the Head of Sports in ENSUBEB, Mrs Anthonia Odika, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the pupils participating in the sports activities, and commend ENSUBEB and UBEC for making the competition a reality.
Odika expressed optimism that the 2027b edition of the competition would provide ground for more talents to be discovered at the basic education in Enugu State.
