Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable career with the Portugal national team.
The 41-year-old forward, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, leaves behind an extraordinary international legacy, having established himself as Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the most influential players in the country’s football history.
Ronaldo played a pivotal role in Portugal’s historic triumph at the 2016 UEFA European Championship, their first major international trophy. He also helped the national team win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Ronaldo, who made his international debut in August 2003, confirmed his decision in an emotional video message posted on social media on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
He said he was ready to hand over Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt to the next generation.
“The day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said, referring to his iconic jersey number.
