The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has promised to increase the number of the state’s flagship primary healthcare centres from 87 to 150 if elected governor in 2027.

Hamzat made the pledge on Sunday during the Lagos Governorship Debate organised by the Nigeria Debate Consortium, where he outlined his plans for healthcare, housing, transportation and environmental management.

He said the proposed primary healthcare centres would operate round the clock to improve access to essential medical services across the state.

On housing, the incumbent Deputy Governor promised to enforce existing regulations against arbitrary rent increases and the demand for multiple years’ rent in advance.

He said his administration would ensure compliance with the Lagos State Real Estate Registration Agency Law, which prohibits landlords from demanding more than one year’s rent in advance.

Hamzat disclosed that the state had delivered 24 housing estates in the last eight years, adding that more mortgage facilities would be introduced to make homeownership accessible to residents.

He also pledged to complete ongoing housing projects across the state.

Addressing transportation challenges, the APC candidate promised an integrated system of road, rail and water transportation to improve mobility and reduce pressure on roads.

He said his administration would pursue the extension of the Blue Line to Agbado and the Red Line, while maximising Lagos waterways for mass transportation.

Hamzat also highlighted plans to deploy 4,000 compressed natural gas-powered buses and 77 electric ferries, with a target of moving one million passengers daily.

He maintained that government investment remained critical to developing rail infrastructure, arguing that private-sector funding alone had not delivered a rail system anywhere in Africa.

On environmental management, Hamzat described Lagos’s drainage network as extensive but stressed the need for regular maintenance and the removal of blockages to ensure the free flow of water into the creeks.

He acknowledged the economic difficulties facing residents, citing rising prices of essential commodities and petrol, but said the state government could ease the burden through strategic interventions in housing, agriculture and transportation.

According to him, the proposed measures would form part of his administration’s broader strategy to improve living conditions and strengthen public infrastructure across Lagos State.
