Akinsanya’s Turbaning: A Celebration of Faith, Service, and Unity |LAGOS EYE NEWS

In a grand celebration of faith and leadership, the Muslim community of Mushin Constituency 1 gathered to witness the turbaning of Alhaji (Prince) Hon. Nureni Akinsanya as the Baba Adinni of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA. Bestowed by the Association of Chief Imams, Imams, and Alfas, this revered title is more than just an honor—it is a recognition of Akinsanya’s unwavering commitment to Islamic values, community development, and public service.

The turbarning coincided with the 19th memorial lecture of Akinsanya’s late father, Chief Moshood Akanbi Akinsanya, adding a profound sense of continuity and generational responsibility to the occasion. Presiding over the ceremony was Alhaji Abdul Gafar Banu, the President-General of the Association of Chief Imams, who led a distinguished gathering of Muslim clerics, political figures, and community leaders.

The significance of the event was reflected in the presence of high-ranking dignitaries, including the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dr. Mudashiru Obasa, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, and several members of the Lagos State Assembly. Their attendance underscored the deep connection between faith and governance, as well as Akinsanya’s respected role in both spheres.

Rt. Hon. Dr. Obasa, popularly known for his consistent support of Islamic causes within Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, highlighted the crucial role of religious leadership in community development. The gathering also included traditional rulers, grassroots supporters, and respected scholars, making it a powerful testament to unity across different sectors.

A key moment in the ceremony was the thought-provoking sermon by Sheikh Abdul Rasaq Musbashir Woleola, titled “Who Should We Do Good Towards?” His message resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing that acts of kindness should not be transactional or selective.

“If you see your neighbor hungry and look away, you haven’t done well,” he admonished, urging all Muslims to embrace selflessness and communal support. His words served as a reminder that leadership—whether religious or political—is best measured by the positive impact one has on others.

For Alhaji Nureni Akinsanya, the Baba Adinni title is not merely an honorary distinction—it is a spiritual endorsement, carrying both responsibility and expectation. Unlike accolades that can be acquired through influence or wealth, this title is a reflection of trust, earned through years of dedication to faith and service.

Many in the community see his turbaning not as an endpoint but as a renewed call to action. It reinforces the idea that leadership is about building bridges—across religious, ethnic, and socio-political divides. In an era where division often overshadows unity, Akinsanya’s recognition stands as a beacon of inclusivity.

As one community member put it: “Our country needs not just achievers but, more importantly, bridge builders—men and women who understand that all people, regardless of background, deserve to be treated equally and justly.”

This sentiment echoes the Islamic principles of justice and unity, reinforcing the idea that faith should be a source of harmony rather than division.
In his heartfelt appreciation speech, the newly turbaned Baba Adinni expressed deep gratitude to the religious leaders, political figures, and community members who stood by him.

“Your presence and unwavering support mean the world to me and my family,” he said, acknowledging the collective efforts that made the ceremony possible.

He concluded with a prayer: “May Almighty Allah bless you all abundantly and grant us many more opportunities to come together in faith and unity.”

Ultimately, the turbaning of Alhaji Nureni Akinsanya is not about status—it is about service. It is a commitment to uphold the values of faith, inclusivity, and community development.

As the Muslim community and the larger society celebrate this milestone, one truth remains clear: true leadership is not about power, but about uplifting others. Guided by faith and a commitment to the greater good, Akinsanya’s journey as Baba Adinni is only just beginning.
