Former senator, Shehu Sani, has responded to the recent statement by immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, who claimed he left office with the same amount of physical wealth he had when he assumed power in 2015.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Sani downplayed the relevance of Buhari’s personal wealth declaration, asserting that the true measure of leadership lies in the well-being of the citizens after years of governance.
“The Almighty Allah knows better about his claim, his family or relations. I think what should matter most is the condition of the people who elected him after their years of sacrifices, suffering and struggle before his ultimate victory,” Sani wrote.
The former lawmaker acknowledged the massive public support Buhari enjoyed prior to his election, describing it as unprecedented. “I don’t know of any politician who the masses contributed their money and sacrificed their lives to see to him thrusted to power,” he said.
He went on to question the tangible outcomes of Buhari’s eight-year administration, posing critical questions about security, economic development, and general prosperity. “When he ascended and left power; have the masses fared better? Are they safer? Are their regions more developed? Are they more prosperous? Have their economies improved? Are their lives better?” he asked.
Concluding his remarks, Sani suggested that Buhari’s personal lifestyle and claim of frugality were of lesser importance when compared to the controversies that rocked key institutions during his tenure. “His claim of prudence and Spartan life matters less than what happened at the CBN and other parastatals under his watch,” he added.
