Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the ongoing impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, further exposing divisions within the legislature.
The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II), announced their decision on Wednesday, calling on their colleagues to suspend the impeachment proceedings and embrace dialogue as a means of resolving the political crisis in the state.
Their withdrawal comes barely 24 hours after the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo, and Peter Abbey, who represents Degema Constituency, also distance themselves from the impeachment move. With the latest development, four lawmakers who were initially associated with the impeachment notice have now reversed their positions.
The lawmakers said their decision was influenced by appeals from respected political and community leaders, as well as concerns over rising political tension in the oil-rich state.
While acknowledging allegations of constitutional breaches against the governor, they emphasized the need to prioritize peace and stability over actions that could further inflame the situation.
They urged members of the Assembly to pursue constructive engagement and dialogue, warning that continued escalation could undermine governance and public confidence in the state’s democratic institutions.
The latest withdrawals are seen as a significant setback to the impeachment effort and highlight growing calls within the Assembly for a negotiated political settlement.
