Correctional Service Foils Drug Smuggling Attempt at Akure Custodial Centre |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has foiled an attempt by two visitors to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Akure.

The incident occurred during a routine security check at the gate lodge, where vigilant correctional officers discovered approximately four grams of Indian hemp concealed inside fresh tomatoes.

The substance was reportedly wrapped in water-tight nylon and allegedly meant for delivery to an inmate in custody.

In compliance with the directive of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, on maintaining watertight security across custodial centres, the suspects were immediately arrested and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Controller of Corrections, Ondo State Command, CC Oyewole Charles (JP), commended the officers involved for their professionalism, vigilance, and dedication to duty.

He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to ensuring secure and humane custodial facilities, while decisively eliminating all forms of illicit drug trafficking within the correctional system.

The Command also issued a stern warning to members of the public, particularly visitors to custodial centres, stressing that the Nigerian Correctional Service will not tolerate any act capable of compromising the security and safety of its facilities, whether from within or outside the custodial walls.
