US Leaders Pay Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr on Birthday Anniversary |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Political leaders, civil rights advocates and business figures across the United States have paid tribute to Dr Martin Luther King Jr, as the country marked the birthday of the iconic civil rights leader whose activism helped dismantle Jim Crow segregation and advance racial equality.

Dr King, who was assassinated in 1968, is remembered for leading non-violent campaigns that contributed to landmark legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

According to Lagos Eye News, tributes poured in from across the political, religious and corporate spectrum, reflecting Dr King’s enduring influence on American public life.

Former US President Barack Obama said Dr King dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and equity, urging Americans to continue the struggle for a fairer society.

“Even in the face of intimidation and discrimination, Dr King taught us that we must never stop working towards a better future,” Mr Obama said, adding that change requires “persistence, determination and the courage to stand up for what we believe in.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama echoed the message, quoting Dr King’s famous words that “darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that”.

She called on citizens to remain engaged through peaceful action, civic participation and voting, saying lasting change was still possible despite ongoing injustice.

Religious leader Joel Osteen also praised Dr King’s faith-driven leadership, highlighting his belief in hope amid uncertainty.

“Dr King walked boldly in faith, believing in a better future even when he couldn’t see it all,” Mr Osteen said, urging people to take “bold steps of faith” in their own lives.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook described Dr King as a symbol of service and moral responsibility, saying his message reminded people that everyone has the power to contribute to positive change.

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” Mr Cook said, quoting Dr King.

Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar also paid tribute, repeating Dr King’s warning against hate and division, particularly at a time of what she described as “deep injustice”.

Meanwhile, civil rights advocates and public officials marked the day with community events, service projects and reflections on Dr King’s legacy, which continues to shape debates around racial justice, policing and voting rights.

The Martin Luther King Jr holiday, observed annually in 19 January, is recognised as a national day of service in the United States, encouraging citizens to honour his legacy through volunteer work and civic engagement.
