Tensions rise in Uganda as army chief orders opposition leader to surrender |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Tensions in Uganda have sharply escalated after the country’s army chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, ordered opposition leader Bobi Wine to surrender within 48 hours.

Muhoozi, who is also the son of President Yoweri Museveni, made the demand in a post on social media platform X.

In the same message, he claimed that security forces had killed several supporters of Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

The demand comes in the wake of last week’s election, in which Museveni was declared the winner with 71.6% of the vote — securing an unprecedented eighth term in office. Wine, a popular musician turned politician, placed second with 24%.

The election results have been widely criticized by international observers and human rights groups, who have raised concerns over transparency and alleged irregularities.

Since the election, authorities have intensified a crackdown on opposition supporters. More than 100 people linked to election-related unrest have been charged with offences, according to reports.

The developments underscore growing political tension in Uganda and raise serious questions about the future of democratic processes in the country.
