A senior Lagos State transport official has apprehended a bullion van driver for driving against traffic on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, in what authorities say is part of efforts to improve road safety.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, stopped the driver, identified as Daniel Ikede, at the Chevron area of Lekki during an on-site inspection of planned rehabilitation works along the corridor.
Mr Giwa said the incident highlighted the need for strict adherence to traffic laws, describing driving against traffic as a major cause of road accidents and avoidable loss of life.
He expressed concern over what he called the recklessness often associated with such violations, questioning why some motorists believed they were above the law.
Referring to the incident, Mr Giwa said the driver appeared to assume he could flout traffic rules because he was operating a bullion van, despite traffic flowing freely at the time.
“You cannot drive against traffic on the Lagos Expressway,” he said, according to officials present at the scene.
The special adviser urged motorists to drive with caution, stressing that road safety was a shared responsibility. He added that the driver would be handed over to the appropriate authorities to face penalties in line with traffic regulations.
