The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the process to select a new Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, citing security reports and petitions from stakeholders.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, in a letter dated 20 January and addressed to the chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government.
According to the letter, the decision followed multiple petitions as well as reports from security agencies and other key stakeholders over the ongoing selection process.
Mr Hamzat said the suspension was necessary to address emerging concerns, maintain public order and protect the integrity and sanctity of the Awujale stool.
The letter, titled “Re: Awujale Selection Process,” described the Awujale throne as one of the most prominent traditional stools in Yorubaland and Ogun State. It also referred to the influence of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona, whose 65-year reign significantly enhanced the prestige and modern relevance of the throne, placing increased scrutiny on the emergence of his successor.
The commissioner noted that under provisions of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State, 2021, the state government has the authority to set aside or halt an appointment in the interest of peace, order and good governance.
He said the government, acting on available intelligence and in a bid to prevent unrest, decided to suspend the selection process in its entirety.
Mr Hamzat directed the chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government to immediately inform the Awujale Kingmakers’ Council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of the decision, advising them to await further instructions from the state government.
