Nigerian international Ademola Lookman has officially said goodbye to Italian club Atalanta after nearly four years, as he prepares to complete a move to Spanish side Atlético Madrid.
In an emotional social media message, Lookman thanked the Atalanta “family” for their support since his arrival in Bergamo, recalling historic moments including scoring a hat‑trick in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final—a performance that helped the club secure its first European trophy in 61 years and earned him personal acclaim.
“To the Atalanta family, after nearly four years, the time has come for me to say goodbye,” Lookman wrote in his farewell post. “From the moment I arrived in Bergamo, you welcomed me like one of your own and pushed me to be the best version of myself.”
He highlighted that the memories of lifting silverware, winning the Africa Player of the Year award in 2024 and nights under the lights will remain “engraved in my heart.” The forward also thanked teammates, staff and supporters for their passion and energy.
Lookman’s departure comes amid interest from several European clubs over the past 18 months and follows his decision to seek a new challenge after a long transfer saga that saw potential moves to other clubs discussed but ultimately not materialise.
Atlético Madrid confirmed they have reached an agreement with Atalanta for the transfer, with Lookman already in Madrid to undergo a medical and finalise his contract. Reports suggest the deal is worth around €35 million, with potential add‑ons bringing the total closer to €40 million.
The 28‑year‑old winger, who began his professional career at Charlton Athletic and later played for Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester City, has been a key figure for both club and country. His move to Atlético marks a new chapter in his career as he aims to make an impact in La Liga.
Lookman’s contributions have been significant for Atalanta, with supporters remembering his role in some of the club’s most memorable recent moments. His transfer to Atlético Madrid ends a notable chapter in Bergamo, while setting the stage for fresh challenges in Spain.
