Lagos State has launched Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) clubs in public primary schools, in a move aimed at promoting responsible leadership and sustainability among young learners.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr Oreoluwa Finnih, said the initiative was designed to introduce sustainability values early in children’s education.
Speaking through the Permanent Secretary in the Office of SDGs, Mrs Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, she described the programme as a strategic effort to build a more inclusive and sustainable future for the state.
The scheme, introduced under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, aligns with the United Nations’ Goal 4 on Quality Education. Officials say it will help ensure that education in Lagos goes beyond basic literacy to include character development, responsibility and global awareness among more than 3.3 million pupils.
Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Dr Hakkem Babatunde Shittu, said the clubs would encourage value-based learning and empower pupils to become agents of positive change.
Several education stakeholders and government officials attended the inauguration, including LASUBEB Co-Curricular Chairman, Babatunde Adewale Jimoh, and Board Secretary, Lamidi Hakeem Abiodun.
Authorities say the initiative forms part of broader efforts to integrate sustainable development principles into the state’s education system.
