The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has said security should be seen not only as a matter for law enforcement agencies but also as a shared spiritual and moral responsibility of all members of society.
Speaking at the 31st pre-Ramadan lecture organised by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni, Speaker Obasa said the safety and stability of communities depended on collective efforts rooted in compassion, justice and mutual care.
He told the audience that security went beyond policing streets and borders, describing it as a duty that included protecting the vulnerable, preventing injustice and strengthening social bonds.
Mr Obasa said the pursuit of a secure society reflected values central to faith, adding that efforts to promote peace and justice were comparable to the moral striving required to attain spiritual fulfilment.
The Speaker also identified poverty as a major driver of insecurity, arguing that lasting solutions must address social and economic inequalities.
He said effective security required more than enforcement measures, emphasising the importance of fairness, transparency and humanitarian support for disadvantaged groups.
According to Obasa, acts of compassion and justice contributed to both social stability and moral development, helping to build peaceful communities.
Speaker Obasa described Lagos as a diverse city where people of different cultures and religions co-exist, noting that interfaith dialogue and supportive legislation had helped promote peaceful relations.
He said religious teachings encouraged believers to uphold justice, assist those in need and contribute positively to society.
The Speaker expressed appreciation to the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni for organising the lecture, themed “The Light Beyond: Guiding Our Souls to Paradise”.
He also acknowledged contributions from guest speakers, including Dr Ridwan Jamiu and Prof Is’haq Oloyede, who spoke on spirituality and national security.
