Residents of Juba were gripped by fear and uncertainty on Thursday following a large-scale deployment of security forces across key parts of the city, with authorities offering limited explanation for the unusual move.
Security personnel, including operatives from the Military Intelligence and the National Security Service, were heavily stationed at strategic locations such as the Seventh Day Adventist Roundabout, areas near the University of Juba, Ministries Road, Amarat, and Airport Road. Witnesses also reported the presence of armoured vehicles and tanks.
The sudden show of force triggered panic among residents, with several businesses shutting down early and workers rushing home. Many described the situation as tense, expressing concern over the lack of clear communication from authorities.
Civil society groups have called on the government to promptly address the public to prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation that could heighten anxiety.
In response, police authorities stated that the deployment is part of routine security preparations ahead of the 2026 general elections. Officials maintained that there is no immediate threat and urged residents to remain calm.
Despite these assurances, tension persists across the city as residents await further clarification from the government.
