A violent incident in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has reportedly left one person dead and several others injured after armed men believed to be political thugs went on a rampage, firing shots in different parts of the city.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, who were travelling in a convoy of branded buses, stormed areas including Akoda and Oke-Fia, shooting sporadically and causing panic among residents, traders, and motorists who fled for safety.
The assailants were said to have moved through major routes in the city in a coordinated manner, with residents describing scenes of chaos as gunfire echoed across busy streets.
In a related development at Owode-Ede, reports indicate that a trader was fatally shot during the violence, while at least three others sustained life-threatening injuries.
Sources in the area alleged that the attackers operated in large numbers and targeted individuals perceived to be affiliated with a rival political camp. However, these claims remain unverified at the time of filing this report.
Victims of the shooting are currently receiving treatment in undisclosed medical facilities, according to local accounts.
Some eyewitnesses claimed that individuals wearing certain political insignia were singled out during the attack, raising concerns about possible political motivations behind the violence.
A video circulating on social media showed one of the injured victims alleging that supporters of a political group were responsible for the shooting. These claims have not been independently confirmed.
Security personnel were reportedly seen in the vicinity during parts of the incident, though it remains unclear what role, if any, they played in the unfolding violence.
In reaction to the incident, a political group condemned the attack, describing it as a serious threat to public peace and democratic stability. The group called on security authorities to launch a full investigation and bring those responsible to justice, regardless of political affiliation.
They also urged political leaders in the state and at the national level to intervene to prevent further escalation of violence.
