Nigeria and Cameroon have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening bilateral defence cooperation and enhancing security along their shared southern border.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday in Yaoundé by Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, and Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Presidency in Charge of Defence, Joseph Beti Assomo. The signing concluded two days of high-level discussions involving defence and security officials from both countries.
According to officials, the MoU establishes a modernised framework for addressing emerging security threats across both land and maritime domains. It also reinforces the longstanding defence partnership between Nigeria and Cameroon.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the key areas of cooperation outlined in the agreement include enhanced operational coordination, intelligence sharing, logistics support, joint military training, personnel exchange programmes, and stronger mechanisms for responding collectively to evolving security challenges.
Speaking during the ceremony, General Musa described the agreement as a significant step toward institutionalising military cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. He noted that the framework would support coordinated operations and strengthen efforts to tackle shared security concerns.
The discussions also focused on the operationalisation of the recently established Combined Maritime Joint Task Force, which is expected to serve as a strategic platform for improving maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. Both nations identified the initiative as critical to protecting regional economic interests and countering maritime threats.
On defence industrial cooperation, the Nigerian Defence Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to expanding partnerships in defence technology and innovation.
He highlighted the challenges posed by limited indigenous military hardware production across Africa and stressed the need for stronger regional collaboration to enhance defence capabilities.
General Musa further pointed to opportunities available through Nigeria’s Defence Industries Corporation framework, expressing readiness to collaborate on defence manufacturing, technology transfer, research, innovation, and capacity development.
In his remarks, Cameroon’s Defence Minister Delegate, Joseph Beti Assomo, expressed interest in deepening cooperation in defence innovation and technology.
He disclosed that a formal proposal framework is being finalised to facilitate concrete bilateral arrangements in the sector.
