The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Rivers State has commenced the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials ahead of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20.
Speaking during the distribution exercise at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in Port Harcourt, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Rivers State, Johnson Alalibo Senikien, assured stakeholders and voters of the commission’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election.
According to INEC, four political parties will participate in the bye-election, which will be conducted across seven local government areas of the senatorial district.
The commission disclosed that a total of 858,573 registered voters are expected to vote at 1,629 polling units spread across the affected local government areas.
The bye-election is being held to fill the vacant seat in the National Assembly following the death of the former lawmaker, Barry Mpigi, who represented the constituency.
INEC reiterated its readiness to ensure a credible electoral process and urged voters to come out peacefully and exercise their civic responsibility on election day.
