Sanwo-Olu Orders Immediate Scale-Up of Waste Evacuation Across Lagos |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across Lagos State following growing concerns over the recent accumulation of refuse in several parts of the metropolis.

LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that heaps of waste have become noticeable in some areas across the state, despite ongoing efforts by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and other relevant agencies to address the situation.

In response, the governor directed key agencies, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, and other stakeholders in the waste management sector, to intensify efforts aimed at clearing waste backlogs and restoring environmental cleanliness across affected communities.

Speaking on the development, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the magnitude of the challenge, noting that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily.

“Lagos generates over 13,000 tons of waste every single day. Managing this requires a massive effort, but our determination to fix the current challenge is absolute,” the governor said.

He also appealed to residents to support government efforts by adopting responsible waste disposal practices.

“As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads.

“We are fully on top of this situation. Let us work together to keep Lagos clean and safe for everyone,” he added.

The state government further disclosed that additional resources have been deployed to improve waste collection and disposal services across affected areas. Residents were assured that the current challenges are temporary and are receiving the highest level of government attention.

Authorities also urged members of the public to support environmental sanitation initiatives by disposing of waste responsibly and refraining from practices that obstruct drainage systems, roadways, and designated waste collection points.
