The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has evacuated occupants and commenced the demolition of a severely distressed building at Akinyele Bus Stop, Abesan Estate, Lagos, after confirming that the structure posed a serious threat to lives and property.
According to the Agency, the emergency response followed a report from a concerned resident who contacted LASBCA through its toll-free line after noticing visible signs of structural failure and expressing concerns over the safety of occupants and nearby residents.
LASBCA said a team of structural experts and enforcement officers was immediately deployed to inspect the building. The assessment confirmed that the structure had developed critical defects, making it unsafe for habitation and at risk of collapse.
Following the inspection, the Agency evacuated all occupants and began a controlled demolition of the building in line with its mandate to protect lives and ensure public safety.
Speaking on the operation, the General Manager of LASBCA, Bldr. Gbaye Florence, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to preventing building collapse by identifying and removing unsafe structures across Lagos State.
She commended the resident who reported the distressed building, noting that the prompt action enabled the Agency to intervene before the situation escalated into a tragedy.
The General Manager urged residents to report distressed, abandoned, or visibly defective buildings to LASBCA, stressing that public cooperation is essential in preventing building collapse and safeguarding lives and property.
She also assured Lagosians that the Agency would continue to monitor buildings across the state, enforce compliance with building safety regulations, and respond swiftly to reports of distressed structures.
LASBCA reiterated its appeal to members of the public to report suspected distressed buildings and other building safety concerns through its toll-free line, for prompt intervention.
