The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the remand of the immediate past President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti Students’ Union Government (FUOYE SUG), Comrade Adio, by a Magistrate Court in Ekiti State.
In a statement issued by the National President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the association said it was informed that Adio was remanded over a case he had personally filed before the court.
According to NANS, available information indicates that Adio was the complainant in the matter and was not facing any criminal charges. The association alleged that the case was turned against him through the actions of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and the presiding magistrate.
NANS described the development as “judicial rascality,” alleging that it amounted to a gross abuse of due process and a violation of the former student leader’s fundamental rights.
The student body announced that it had directed its Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Chairman for the Ekiti Axis and its National Head of Administration to begin mobilisation for peaceful actions.
It said lawful protests would be staged at the Ekiti State High Court, the Magistrate Court, and the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions until Comrade Adio is released and justice is served.
NANS reiterated its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian students, insisting that it would not remain silent when the rights of students are allegedly violated.
The Ekiti State judiciary and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions had not publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
